Wonderful things the Holy Spirit does(John 16:4-14)
Wonderful things the Holy Spirit does(John 16:4-14)
Jesus left His sorrowful disciples behind to bear the cross, and in order to comfort them, He repeated several words multiple times. He emphasized prayer the most, and next in most repeated topic was His discourse about the Holy Spirit. If you read continuously from John 14 to 16, you’ll find that He mentioned the Holy Spirit four times. Repetition indicates the importance of the subject. These were His final words before His death, demonstrating their profound significance. Jesus repeated His teachings about the Holy Spirit four times for no other reason than to emphasize their extreme importance.
Jesus said, “Now you are filled with grief, but I tell you, it is for your benefit that I am leaving. Unless I go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.”
Why would it be more beneficial for Jesus to die and leave His disciples? It is because by departing to the Father, Jesus would be able to send the Holy Spirit to them. Why is the coming of the Holy Spirit advantageous? Jesus had a physical body, which limited Him in terms of time and space. However, the Holy Spirit, being spiritual, is not bound by time and space. What’s even more astonishing is that the Holy Spirit can enter into the hearts of all people. When the Holy Spirit comes, He can simultaneously work within everyone. The essential benefit of the Holy Spirit’s coming lies in this truth. Today, let’s explore the marvelous and mysterious things that only the Holy Spirit can accomplish.
Let’s read verse 13 first.
John 16:13 But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. The Holy Spirit guides us into the truth.
Truth is the Word of God, and truth is Jesus.
The Holy Spirit helps us by doing many things in our salvation and sanctification and in our real life.
However, the very important work of the Holy Spirit is to lead us to the truth, the Word of God and to Jesus. The meaning of leading has the original meaning of teaching. Rather than simply meaning that we realize it through knowledge, it means that the Holy Spirit actually guides and teaches us to personally experience the truth because the Holy Spirit is a person.
The Holy Spirit guides in truth means that the Comforter, who comes from his Father and is sent by Jesus, will teach and remind us of the words of Jesus, as Jesus already said in John 14,15. The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, is fundamentally the one who helps us understand and realize the Word of God properly.
There are believers who misunderstand the role of the Holy Spirit. Some people think of the Holy Spirit only as someone who gives us gifts. There are people who think that the Holy Spirit gives some kind of ability. The Holy Spirit is by no means a physical force; He is God and a Person. He is a Person with knowledge, emotion, and will. He leads us to the Word that is truth.
God’s word is like fire and like a hammer. When can the word of God become fire and a hammer to burn the sins of my heart and break my arrogant heart? It is when the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is in the words spoken to them. It is said that the word of God is the sword of the Spirit. When does the word of God act like a sword? When the Holy Spirit works, the Word works like a sword to attack and defend from the devil.
As you read the Bible, how often do you experience the Bible speaking to you personally?
Jesus told Peter, who was exhausted after fishing all night but had not caught anything, to “go out into the deep and lower your nets.” When Peter obeyed, he caught so many fish that the boat sank. When Peter obeyed the Lord’s words to him personally, he experienced a miraculous transformation.
The word given here personally is the word of rhema. The Holy Spirit wants to guide each of us into the truth with the word of rhema today. The Holy Spirit wants to guide us into the truth and help us experience the power of the Word.
When we listen to the word of the rhema given to us, the following things will happen.
First, the Word becomes spiritual food.
Mat 4:4 Jesus answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.
In living with ‘all words’, ‘word’ is rhema in the original language. The words that the Holy Spirit gives me to realize personally become spiritual food for me as the words of the rhema.
Second, through the word of rhema, we gain faith.
Rom 10:17 Therefore faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
It is not important to read a lot of the Word and listen to a lot of sermons, but to receive it as the word of the rhema given to you. Because that word gives you faith. The word of rhema gives you the faith that gives salvation, the faith that overcomes the environment, the world, and sin. You can hear the Word that makes you have this kind of faith through the Holy Spirit, so my hope is that you rely on the Holy Spirit more when dealing with the Word. Whenever you listen to a sermon, I hope that you saints will have a habit of taking a notepad and a pen and writing down the words that touch you.
Third, the word of rhema brings spiritual victory. Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17b.
The word of rhema, is when the Holy Spirit personally gives you the word of truth to attack the enemy and defend from the attacks of the deceiver, the liar and the proud devil, which brings victory. In those moments of spiritual battle, the word becomes the sword of the Holy Spirit to attack and defend against the devil.
In this way, the Holy Spirit guides us in the Word of Truth. Beloved saints, I hope you listen to the Word of God and meditate on it while humbly longing for the Word of God, relying on the Holy Spirit. Thirst and longing is an ability. The desire for the Word of God itself comes from God the Holy Spirit. Even during the sermon, I hope you come to the sermon with the mindset and expectation of ‘Lord, give me Your living words through this sermon.
Also, the Holy Spirit guides us into the truth, helping us recognize who Jesus is. Only the Holy Spirit makes us realize the meaning of the cross and resurrection and who Jesus is. Who is Jesus to you? Messiah? Lord? Son of God? God?
Rev 19:7 Let us rejoice and rejoice greatly and give him glory. For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made preparations.
Does anyone know and experience Jesus as your Bridegroom? The Bible says that Jesus is the husband and the church is the bride of Jesus.
Rev 22:17 The Spirit and the Bride say, Come! And let him who hears say, Come, and let him who is thirsty come. And let him who desires, take the water of life without cost.
The last chapter of the Bible is Revelation 22. The church, the bride of Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are inviting to receive the water of life with the same heart posture. It shows the intimacy between the church and the Holy Spirit and gives the message that the church must restore its identity as a bride in the last days.
The most intimate relationship in this world is the relationship between husband and wife, not between parents and children. Spiritually, the relationship between Jesus, the husband, and the Church of the bride is an absolutely close and intimate relationship. In the last days even to overcome the tribulations, it is a message that we must live in closeness and intimacy with Jesus as husband more than anyone else. I bless you to stay in God’s presence like David and open your spiritual eyes to the revelation that Jesus is the bridegroom, and love Him with a passionate heart. May Jesus be not only Lord and Savior, but also your most beloved Husband and Lord.
Second, the amazing thing the Holy Spirit does is that the Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus.
Why did the Holy Spirit come to this earth? Just as Jesus came to earth to obey God and glorify God, the Holy Spirit came to earth to glorify Jesus.
The Holy Spirit only focuses on Jesus and glorifies Jesus. The criterion for whether or not it is the work of the Holy Spirit can be known by looking at whether or not Jesus is being glorified.
How does the Holy Spirit want to glorify Jesus through us? When we fulfill Jesus’ wishes, we can glorify Jesus. What does Jesus want most? To restore complete salvation is to restore the image of Jesus, and secondly, to preach the gospel of Jesus.
The meaning of glory is a word that has meanings such as heavy and honor etc., but in a way, glory can be said to have the same meaning as God. Where God is, there is glory, and where the Holy Spirit is present, there is the glory of Jesus, and the more we become like Jesus, the more we can glorify God. Therefore, in order for us to glorify God, our character must be transformed into the character of Jesus every day with the help of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit came to transform our character. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of love, and the Holy Spirit pours into us the ability to love.
What we really need every day is the love of God that we need more than the daily food. Use the 5 languages of love. Take quality time to spend with your loved ones. Serve with your body. Recognize, encourage, and comfort the children and beloved one with words of praise. Pray for the ability to understand and empathize with the other person when relationship difficulties arise. The Holy Spirit will pour out the power of love on us every day.
I pray in the name of the Lord that all of us may glorify Jesus by bearing more fruit of the Spirit through our lives following the desires of the Spirit, not the desires of the flesh.
Lastly, the Holy Spirit wants us to glorify Jesus with our lives as His witnesses.
Let’s read Acts 1:8.
Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
The essential work of the Holy Spirit is to testify about Jesus. We can glorify Jesus through evangelism, which is what Jesus wants most.
The Holy Spirit wants us to testify about Jesus through the various powers of the Holy Spirit today. Therefore, seek the fullness of the Holy Spirit and the power of the Holy Spirit.
The people of Acts testified about Jesus through the various powers and gifts of the Holy Spirit. After healing the crippled man who had been crippled for 40 years, people came and Peter preached the death and resurrection of Jesus. At that time, 5,000 people were saved.
1Co 12:7 To every man the manifestation of the Spirit is given, for the good.
1Co 12:8 “To one the word of wisdom by the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit.”
1Co 12:9 “to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by one Spirit,”
1Co 12:10 “To some it is given to do miracles, to others to prophesy, to others to discern spirits, to others to speak in various tongues, to others to interpret tongues”
1Co 12:11 All these things are wrought by one and the same Spirit, distributing to each one as he wills.
The manifestation of the Holy Spirit is given to each person so that they may benefit from him. The gift of the Holy Spirit is the result of the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, and the outward manifestation of the presence and fullness of the Holy Spirit.
If we are filled with the Holy Spirit, various gifts and abilities will naturally appear through us according to the will of the Holy Spirit.
Words of Wisdom, Words of Knowledge – gifts associated with the Word. Faith, the gift of healing, the working of miracles, – these are gifts related to the working of miracles. Prophecy, speaking in tongues, interpreting tongues – these are gifts related to speech.
Why do these gifts appear? Because the Holy Spirit wants to preach Jesus through that gift. It is because these gifts make it easier and more effective to share the gospel of Jesus.
During the sermon at the last worship service of the July summer retreat, a sweet fragrance that was powerful entered the room. Later, I heard that several saints also smelled the same. I had experienced this before, so I knew that this sweet fragrance was the presence of the Lord. And we prayed together for those who wanted to be prayed for. There was healing of disease. Some young people even experienced vibrations in their bodies. Dear saints, these symptoms such as being healed and trembling are temporary. Through these experiences, the Lord wants us to believe that the Lord is alive and become His witnesses more diligently.
I watched the evangelism conference on YouTube. The Holy Spirit was poured out during the evangelism meeting led by Evangelist David, which was held in New York about two weeks ago.
A young man testified that he injured his leg while playing soccer and could not walk for six years. After the light of the Holy Spirit entered his eyes, the pain disappeared and he was healed. And when the evangelist verbally proclaimed the fire of the Holy Spirit to come upon him, the fire of the Holy Spirit came upon him and this young man fell down and trembled from the presence of the Holy Spirit. The words of prophecy were proclaimed that this young man would live as an evangelist.
And at the same meeting, a sister who immigrated to the United States from Italy says that for 13 years Satan attacked her and caused her to stutter, so she couldn’t even say her own name, but through the Holy Spirit, her mouth was loosened and she was set free.
Let’s watch the video for a moment.
I earnestly want and pray earnestly that the same outpouring of the Holy Spirit that happened in New York two weeks ago would happen here in our church today.
I believe that when the fullness and anointing of the Holy Spirit comes upon each member of the church, the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, that is, the gifts, will be poured out.
Today I pray that the Holy Spirit will pour out on us the gift of healing, the gift of prophecy, the gift of wisdom and the word, and the gift of tongues. I pray that the Holy Spirit will use all of us as evangelists by pouring various gifts on all the saints.
My earnest prayer topic is for Hope Church to receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit as a unified body.
I pray that our church will be the source of revival in this city. When we long for the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit will be poured out on us. This will mean a time of coming to the Lord while listening to the sermon during worship, realizing one’s sins, and sighing over what to do. I believe that there will be such a work of the Holy Spirit that people walking around the church will be convicted of their sins and come to the place of worship to repent of their sins and come to the Lord.
Our Holy Spirit guides us in His word of truth. To those who rely on the Holy Spirit with an earnest heart, the Holy Spirit guides us in the living Word. The Holy Spirit reveals Jesus as the Bride and helps us to love Him with all our hearts.
Today, the Holy Spirit wants to glorify Jesus through you. Glorify Jesus that you are transformed into His fragrant character. May we all glorify Jesus by preaching Him with the gift and power of the Holy Spirit.
For this kind of life, let us all be close to God the Holy Spirit today. I bless you in the name of the Lord that we welcome the Holy Spirit God, and that we all have conversations with the good Holy Spirit every moment from morning until we go to bed, rely on Him, and win in His presence.
